Creatures who have ?? as their level are too high level for you to tame - you can only tame creatures of your level or lower. Well, you will now automatically receive a pet at lvl one, the type depending on your race (like worgen get mastiffs and tauren get striders), however you cannot control your pet and/or tame a new pet until lvl 10, which you have to do a quest for I believe, although Cataclysm may have changed this. Once you get the power tame beast, then you can use it on a beast, and most all beasts are tamable. DO NOT attack the beast while taming, or it will break the spell. Then feed your pet with fish, meat, bread, fruit, mushrooms, or whatever it will eat until it is happy.
