Yes, rabbits can get many different types of diseases. I will list several diseases below with a short explanation.

Weepy eye- Symptoms include inflamed eyes and discharged eyes. This can lead to a bacterial infection.

Coccidiosis- most common disease in rabbits and can be difficult to get rid of. It affects the intestinal functioning in the rabbit.

Caked mammary glands- milk not sufficiently removed from breast during pregnancy.

Ear Mites- External parasite that can cause itching, spasms, and sometimes nerve damage.

There are many more diseases that rabbits can get. This is just a few of the common ones. I suggest researching if you have a specific issue you need answers to.

Many health problems that rabbits get can be prevented with a healthy, balanced diet; a safe and secure habitat; and an active, happy lifestyle. See the related questions below for info and links about rabbit care and behaviour.

Health problems that rabbits can get include:

  • Overgrown teeth because of genetic problems or low-fibre diet
  • Digestive upset or poisoning from eating something bad (e.g. toxic house plant, furnishings or other things around the home, or human food left within the rabbit's reach)
  • Obesity from an unhealthy diet
  • Sore hocks (irritated, open, infected heels) because of genetic reasons, obesity, and/or inappropriate flooring
  • Urine stones and sludge
  • Mushy poops (cecal dysbiosis) because of diet low in fiber
  • Cecal overproduction because of diet too rich in proteins and fats
  • Broken bones, sprained joints
  • Electrocution from biting into electrical cords
  • Gas (can be serious, leading to GI Stasis)
  • Infections from cuts, abscesses
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Parasite infestations (like "fly-strike," or mites)
  • Ringworm
  • Urinary infection
  • Torticollis ("head tilt" or "wry neck," caused by various things, including injury, infection, parasite, stroke, or brain tumor)
  • Paralysis in the hind legs (for various reasons, including injury, Arthritis, parasite, or infection)
  • VHD (Rabbit Calcivirus Disease)
  • Myxomatosis (another disease)
  • "Splay-leg" because of a congenital defect

Why do rabbits chew on items?

Rabbits will chew on various objects to keep their gnawing teeth short. If the teeth are long, the rabbit will have difficulty eating food and this will lead to serious health problems. If your pet rabbit has long teeth, bring it to the vet to get it clipped. Rabbits or bunnies chew things to either grind their teeth or to get your attention when they make noise if you have one for a pet.
