Lymph nodes are small tissues which house immunity cells which are connected by vessels. They are located around your arm pits, throat, collar bone, etc. The sub pectoral lymph nodes are the ones located under the breast area and have been associated with breast cancer.
If a few of the axillary lymph nodes closest to the breast also are taken out, the surgery may be called an extended simple mastectomy.
Most normal axillary lymph nodes are less than 2cm in size and have a kidney -shape apperance. Lymph drainage from the breast is significant because it is by this route that a malignant disease may leave the breast.
If the cancer has not been contained within the breast, it calls for a modified radical mastectomy , which removes the entire breast and all of the adjacent lymph nodes.
Lymph nodes act as a drainage system. Depending in which part of the body inflamed lymph nodes can mean infection
