Nelson Mandela was a wonderful man, and had a wonderful mind. He and many others are outcasts in society because of the way they think and the way they act. This could be good or bad, depending on what part of society he is viewed in.

Nelson Mandela was always affected by the fact that he chose to serve for the people of Africa before his family. When his mother and son passed away during his dark period of life in Robben Island as a prisoner he was not granted with permission to attend their funeral. This affected him mentally and was one of his weaknesses as he always regretted that he couldn't serve his family properly.
It was a really good place if you were white. It was generally a very bad place if you weren't. A set of laws called Apartheid gave all the rights to whites only.

He worked for years in a hard labor camp, breaking limestone into rocks. The limestone was white and reflected the sun's glare. Over years, this severely and permanently damaged his eyes.
