Most Christians celebrate holidays such as Earth Day and Memorial Day but there are holidays that are distinctly Christian holidays. The main 2 are Christmas which is the celebration of Jesus' birth, and Easter, which is the celebration of Jesus rising from the grave. There is also Black Friday which is the day the Jesus was crucified and Palm Sunday which was the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

Though one may count others, depending on the tradition or denomination they are in, there are two basic days that are recognized in all Christian faiths. (For clarity, the definition of Christian faith is: a group that believes that Jesus is God, part of the trinitarian God-head: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.)

The primary day, or holiday as the question is asked is: Easter, or Resurrection Sunday. Some faiths hold to a different calender than others, but they still celebrate the day.

One is tempted to place the day of the Crucifixtion as one of the "main holidays", but that is not true across all of the faiths included in the definition given above.

The other main day, which the world may consider as a primary, but most devote follower consider it only secondary and functions as a pointer to Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, which is Christmas. Most of the faiths celebrate this tradiditionally on December 25th, but not all of the faiths believe that is the actual birth date of the man Jesus.

Other days that may be considered are not uniformly adhired to or followed in all faiths. A great division exists between Othadoxy (especially Roman Catholic) and protestant faiths, such that the former have special days that the later out right reject. Thus, I believe it is safe to say that across all of the Christian faiths only two days stand out as the "Main holidays in christanity", namely: Easter and Christmas.

When people say Happy Holidays indicating that they are not celebrating Christ's birth instead of saying Merry Christmas are they referring to winter or other holidays?

Although there are some genuine holidays near or on Dec 25th most use the generic Happy Holidays expression to minimize the affect that Christianity and it's influence in the public discussion. Secularists continue to attack Christianity and won't be satisfied until it is eliminated, unfortunately. If there are other holidays near or on that date then simply refer to them by name, no problem. But if you're talking about Christmas Trees and Christmas Cards and Christmas Gifts and baby Jesus well then you need to call it what it is, Christmas. Check out the awesome website listed on the Related Links. The above answer is obviously an angry Christian's response, so I'm going to give the real answer. People say Happy Holidays not to attack Christianity, but to be polite, because guess what, not everyone is Christian and not everyone celebrates Christmas. So if you want to be polite, say Happy Holidays if you do not know if they specifically celebrate Christmas or not (if you know someone does then it is of course acceptable to say Merry Christmas). It is fair and polite; it groups religious as well as ethnic holidays into one.
