Quran is the most sacred written word in Islam, because it is word by word the actual Dictation of Allah to His messenger Muhammed (peace e upon him) through the angel Gabriell (or Jibraeel in arabic). It has never, since being revealed been changed or edited, like all the other books of Allah before that such as the Gospel & The Torah. Allah guards it Himself, and despite challenges posed by Allah to people who ridicule the Quran, nobody has been able to alter even a single Ayah (verse) of the Quran.

No doubt it is a Miracle of miracles.

In addition, the agreed upon words and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as recorded in the 7 most famous books of Hadith {Muslim and Bukhari(sahee hain)} are also of ultimate importance and reverance for Muslims, because these books throw light on the life of the Holy Prophet and how he explained the Quran and the Religeon of Islam to the Muslims.

These books offer us insight about how the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to live, about his family life, about his friends, his likes and dislikes, how he treated others, how others treated him, what supplications he taught, explanations of different things mentioned in the Quran, everything a person needs to know to live a good life in conjunction to the teachings of the Holy Quran.

Muslims try to follow the Quran and live their lives as closely as possible to their Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and how he advised to his friends.

The names of the most accepted books of Hadith are:

Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Jamia Tirmizi, Muwatta Imam Malik, Sunnan Abu Dawood, Sunnan Ibn-e-Maaja, Sunnan Nisai

Any Muslim who reads these books himself or herself as a supplementary reading to the Quan itself, will probably never need to be confused by heresay and misconceptions about Islam, and will be surprised to find the real Islam so different from what different countries' cultures have made it to be.

Islam really has only one holy book, the Qur'an. There are other books that help with interpretation, such as the Hadith Collections (like Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih al-Muslim), the Sirat an-Nabi (the Biography of Muhammad's life), the previous holy books recognized by Islam (specifically the Taurat/Torah, Zabur/Psalms, and the Injil/Gospels).
