Birthing classes, or 'antenatal classes' are a chance for a pregnant woman and her support person (usually a husband or life partner) to learn about the process of late pregnancy, labour and birth, and about life with a new baby. Classes can be offered by hospitals, birth centres, or by other independent providers.

Classes are either held over several weeks or may be held intensively over a weekend.

Birthing classes have two wonderful benefits - reducing fear about the process of birth, and the social networking between mothers-to-be, which creates a great support network for after the birth.

When you are looking around for a class that suits you, check about class size (how many couples maximum will attend - a smaller class will allow you to connect better with other couples, and will most likely give you more chances to get answers to the questions you have - plus they are less intimidating than a large group). If possible, try and speak to the person who will actually be teaching the class - you'll get a good feel for their personality and if you are likely to 'gel' with them.

Good luck!

When should birthing classes be started?

Actually, it's best to think about when is the best time to finish your classes! Aim for a class that finishes about a month before your due date. This allows you a few weeks in case you are early, but not too much time ahead that you will forget everything you have learnt! Most antenatal teachers will cover information about birthing early on in the course, so that if you go into early labour you will at least have labour information already. Birthing classes are a great way to prepare for birth and parenting! They lessen any fears, allow you to talk with other people in the same position as you, and give you lots of information about your options for birthing and early parenting. Choose classes that fit with your personal philosophy about birth, and if possible - speak to the educator before you book in - it's a good way to check if you are going to 'gel' with them - important if you want to be comfortable asking questions! Best wishes for your upcoming 'birth-day'!

What is some good advice on birthing classes?

"One thing you should do is research childbirth methods so that you know what you are looking for in a class ... do this early, because many classes fill up way in advance, and Bradley classes last 8-12 weeks depending on the instructor! Typical Lamaze classes are 6 weeks. Some other classes you may want to take are: First Aid/CPR for infants, Breastfeeding, Parenting." "Ask your OB when you should take the classes. Or, call the place where you are going to take classes and ask them." "Schedule [birthing classes] ASAP. Lots of them book early, and since they run several weeks usually, their time slot doesn't always correspond with your ideal time to take them. For instance, our baby's due in February and the class we're taking is 6-7 weeks long. There's no class over the holidays (which wouldn't have been convenient for us anyway), and most likely the class after the holidays is starting too late for comfort in our case. So, our class starts tomorrow and we booked it a few months ago (when it was already close to booked full)." "I kind of wish I'd shopped around more for one -- I'm not that enthusiastic about the one we're in, but I figured they'd all be about the same (not true, from what I now know!), and the classes fill up fast so you need to sign up soon!" You should do what feels right for you. I never felt that I needed birthing classes and my labor was only 6 hours with 4 minutes of pushing. Though now I wish I had taken some natural child birthing classes because I tried to do it all-natural, but I only made it to a 7 before I caved for the meds, LoL. I would urge you to consider a technique that is gaining in popularity called hypnobirthing. I know it sounds strange, but it really works. A month ago we had a healthy 7 pound 4 ounce girl. My wife was completely peaceful throughout the birth, with no drugs whatsoever, and she says that pain wasn't even a big part of the experience for her. In short, the birthing went exactly like they said it would in the class. We're recommending the class to everyone which is a big difference compared to our friends with kids. None of them thought their birthing classes helped much at all.
