A Nigerian Dwarf goat is between 17" and 21" at the shoulder when grown. They are primarily used as a dairy breed, and produce large amounts of milk for their size. ND goats are fairly tame by nature, and will become very tame with a small amount of effort. Some breeders bottle feed all kids to maintain a very tame herd. A tame nature is common in dairy breeds, as goats must be handled daily when collecting milk. This trait has been selectively bred into Nigerian Dwarf goats.

Their characteristics of stubbornness and independence contribute to the themes of judgment and accountability in the biblical text. Goats serve as a reminder of the consequences of straying from God's will and the importance of repentance and redemption.
Goats and sheep both belong to the same family, Bovidae, but are classified into different genera. Goats belong to the genus Capra, while sheep belong to the genus Ovis.
