Rearing chickens is always an affordable alternative to shopping for eggs and meat. In order to get started, you need to invest a little, but it helps in having fresh eggs everyday and nice chicken dinner once a while. Make sure when you select chickens that you decide if you want them to breed or not.
If you are planning to build a chicken coop, the required materials would be:
Some sheets of Plywood
Chicken Feeders
Any raised bar will do. Approx. 2 or 3 feet off the floor of the coop and allow for 18 inches of roost per bird. Do not build them over food/water or anywhere you do not want droppings. I make mine from 2X2 lumber and round off one edge. Roost should not be smooth as the hens will need to get a grip, plastic like a shower rod is no good.
Here is a website with chicken coop plans, good luck.
