Composite volcanoes are layered with various igneous rocks and minerals of different types, size, and density. Basaltic lava flows, ash, rhyolite, sulfur, and pumice are all examples of materials used to build these structures.

Like nearly all magma it is composed primarily of molten silicate minerals with variable amounts of dissolved gasses. In addition to silica (silicon dioxide), common substances also include magnesium oxide, iron oxide, calcium oxide, sodium oxide, and potassium oxide. There is more variability of composition in the magma of composite volcanoes than there is in in other types, primarily in the relative proportions of these oxides.

What is the type of lava in the composite volcanoes?

Most composite volcanoes are comprised of Andesitic lava. Andesetic lava has an intermediate silica content compared to granitic with a high silica content and basaltic with a low silica content.

What type of magma is found on composite volcano?

The average composition of magma in a composite volcano is andesitic. Composite volcanoes are highly variable though. They can erupt anything from basalt to rhyolite.

All volcanoes are made of gas and magma.

What type of magma does a composite volcano have?

Composite volcanoes can contain a wide variaty of magmas ranging from basaltic to rhyolitic.

Why are there different shaped volcanoes?

Different shaped volcanoes occur because of the way the magma flows. Three types of volcanoes are shield, composite, and caldera.

Do composite volcanoes have high or low silica?

Composite volcanoes are often associated with moderate to high silica contestant, though in reality, the magma composition will vary over time.

What types of volcanoes are created when andesitic magma erupts?

Andesitic magma will result in the formation of a stratovolcano, also called a composite volcano.

Does a composite volcano have a high gas content?

Yes. Composite volcanoes often have a high gas content in their magma, which is why they often erupt explosively.
