.dmg, .iso, are a couple of them.

They are a digital version, exact copy's, of CD/DVDs as an example. Instead of having a physical copy of a CS/DVD and having to carry it around, you can change it into an exact digital copy of the disk and then send it electronically to who ever needs it. If you buy a product from say, Apple or Microsoft, they can send you a disk image instead of the physical DVD. Most company's are going that way.
