US "eagle dollars" are bullion pieces sold for their metal content and not for spending. The dollar denomination is artificial. Their value will change with the price of silver.
Be careful not to confuse these coins with old-style silver dollars (1935 and earlier) that are similar in size and also marked ONE DOLLAR. Those coins contained about 0.77 oz of silver and were minted for use in ordinary commerce, but are no longer in circulation.
