Due to the indutrial age, Monopolies are created in many industries (especially oil) and so the Sherman Antitrust Act (1890) was created. This forbade any combinations that place a restraint on trade. This act was not however used to break up monopolies but instead, it is used to restrict the creation of labor unions.
