What are explorers and finder for?

I assume you are talking about the "explorer.exe" on a windows machine and the "finder" application on a mac. If this is the case, I would say, in laymen's terms, "explorer" and "finder" are applications that allow the user to browse the contents of the computer. In other words, in order to look at files on your computer, for instance, documents, you open either "explorer" or "finder" to do so. When you click (on a windows machine) on the start menu and open "computer" or "documents", you are really opening an instance of the "explorer.exe" application, which then allows you to see the files on your computer. It is the same on a mac; by opening "finder" you allow yourself to see your documents, pictures, music, etc on your computer.
