Having been involved in the war from the start supplying the allied forces , they eventually contributed to the fighting in 1944 because of a German submarine attack on an American passenger boat crossing the Atlantic. The USA saw this as a direct attack and so entered the fighting. This was a major contribution in the final push to end the war, as both sides were starving into submission.
