Abe Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at the Ford's theater toward the end of the Civil War. John was eyeing him prior to the assasination and was part of a group that had planned to kill several other political leaders the same night. The others backed out. Booth was a famous actor and shot Lincoln in his presidential seat that they had at the theater. Booth jumped two stories to the stage where he stated his line for the play and fled through the backdoor to a waiting carridge. Booth had many issues and it is believed that he suffered from a broken ankle following the fall. Lincoln, with a bullet wound in his head retreated to a nearby bed and breakfast/hotel where he died later in the night. He did not die immediately because the gun was not that big, but it was a tough loss for the American people. Lincoln was open to the public. Although he did not heavily require security they were on hand that night. From my understanding, Booth was allowed into the presidential area during the play by the officer on hand. There are several rumors that Lincoln predicted his own death. In fact, some people state that he had bad notions about attending the play that night. Lincoln is my favorite president in history and I find his governing strategies interesting.
