Judah was one of the sons of Jacob. Jacob was also known as Israel later in his life. the name Judah means something like Thanksgiving or praise. It shares the same root as the common todah meaning "thank you." After Judah's brothers throw Joseph into a pit to die, Judah saves him by arranging that he be sold into slavery as an alternative. The tribe of the descendants of Judah eventually settled around Jerusalem, an after the breakup of Solomon's kingdom, the southern kingdom was known as the kingdom of Judah. The name Jew emerged (through transliteration into Greek, Latin, and eventually English) from this tribal name.
