Solomon Northup was a free black man living in Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1841 he was lured to Washington, D. C., and sold into slavery. After nearly twelve years as a slave in Louisiana, he was rescued. He returned to New York State, where he authored a book, Twelve Years A Slave. He lectured extensively throughout the Northeast, and was reported to be helpful to fugitive slaves--even working on the underground railroad for a time.
