your dreams only last about 2 seconds and in that 2 seconds you are just making up the people and places that are in it. the rest of it is just your mind making up what you feel and do.

Dreams occur both rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. Dreams that occur during REM sleep tend to be more vivid and are more likely to be remembered if the dreamer is awakened during the dream. While some dreams last only a few moments, others extend for longer periods of time, with large variations among individuals. The subjects of dreams can include memories and impressions of real people, places and experiences as well as imagined people, places and events. Several notable psychologists, including Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, developed important therapies based on the examination and analysis of dreams. Artists, musicians, physicists and others tell of inspiration or specific information received through dreams that then advanced their professional work.
