After the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, a large, melted-now-solidified, highly radioactive mass known as the "elephant foot" was what was left of the reactor. Several months went by after the meltdown before the level of radioctivity in the room containing the elephant foot was low enough that workers could enter heavily protected in hazard suits and breathing apparatus. If they hadn't waited for the radioactivity to diminish slightly or if the workers had not been wearing extremely heavy-weight protective gear, the workers would have faced terrible health problems. Conditions at the site were horrific. There is no way anything could have servived, let alone thrived, during the months after the meltdown because there were such high levels of radation, right? Wrong! When workers first went back to the site to clean up they found FUNGI growing on the elephant foot. Not bacteria, not cockroaches, FUNGI.
