A narwhal is a vertebrate, because it has a backbone. It's a mammal, because it gives birth to live young. It's cetaceous, because it's related to walruses, porpoises, other whales, and dolphins. It also is cetaceous, because it has frontwards flippers and a flat, notched tail. It's a marine animal, because it lives in the Arctic waters of the higher, north polar latitudes. In that arctic environment, it's found off the coasts of northernmost Canada, Greenland, Iceland, the polar islands near Scotland, and Russia. The narwhal is a picky eater of arctic and polar cod, capelin, Gonatus squid, Greenland halibut, shrimp, and wolffish. It's so committed to its specialized diet that it follows the available food supply through summer and winter migrations. During summer, it feeds on the abundant, easy-to-catch fishes of shallowerwaters. During winter, it dives far down below the pack ice, into the deeper waters. Its diving performance ranges from 30-300 meters/90-900 feet in summer, to 800-1,500 meters/2,400-4,500 feet in winter. It may dive more than 15 times in a day, and stay down for 25 minutes at a time. In turn, Narwhals are preyed upon by hunters: humans, killer whales [Orcinus orca], and polar bears [Ursus maritimus]. At least the human hunt is being subjected to some regulation. Among other reasons, narwhal hunts are historic, longstanding, traditional activities of the Inuit of Canada and Greenland. Narwhal bones become Inuit art and equipment. Narwhal blubber, meat, organs and skin become Inuit food. In fact, an Inuit delicacy is mattak, which is raw narwhal blubber and skin. And Narwhal tusks become Inuit ivory. The tusk tends to be characteristic of male narwhals. It actually is a tooth that grows from the upper jaw, out of the left incisor. About every one in 500 male narwhals grows a second, shorter tusk from the right incisor too. And there are rare instances of a female growing a tusk, and one recorded case of a female having two tusks. The tusks wash up on beaches, where medieval Europeans called them the cast-off horns of the mythical unicorn. But the truth of the narwhal as the tusks' source became widespread through the efforts of Olaus Magnus [October 1490-August 1, 1557].
A Narwhals skin is a rich source of vitamin C for the Inuit people.
