Clarinet: It is a single reed instrument. This instrument has a rich, round sound and a wide range of notes. The Clarinet can play in the low register, where the notes are rich and full. It can play in the middle register. It can also play in the high register.

The orchestral woodwind family descends from instruments that were originally made of wood. these are instruments such as the clarinet and the Saxophone, oboe and bassoon and of course the Flute. woodwind intruments have long different sized and shaped tubes that can alter sound waves making a sound. these can be changed by covering or leaving open sequences of finger holes that are situated along the instrument's length.

  1. Woodwind instruments use vibrating air to produce many different musical sounds.
  2. The instruments in this family all used to be made of wood, which gives them their name. Today, they are made of wood, metal, plastic or some combination.
  3. You play them by blowing air through the mouthpiece (that's the "wind" in "woodwind") and opening or closing the holes with your fingers to change the pitch.
  4. The oldest instrument in the woodwind family is the flute.
  5. The reason the flute is in the woodwind family, although being predominantly made of metal, is a small wooden cork ring in the top section.

Basically, woodwinds are long tubes that are open on one end and have some kind of a mouthpiece at the other - the mouthpiece make a sound when you blow through it. The standard is to bore holes in the tube and then cover them up with the fingers so that by blowing through the mouthpiece the tube resonates over its entire length and makes a sound which is its lowest pitch. By lifting the fingers one at a time the tube becomes shorter and shorter, thus producing higher notes. By blowing harder (and creating overtones) you can play these notes an octave higher (usually) creating an even larger range.
