Tangerine is rural and started out as a winter fishing camp. Many of the charming cottages near Lake Ola have been well-maintained and are delightful to see. From time to time, walking tours are conducted, usually during the winter months.
There are no longer any tangerines, they froze out during the historic freezes of the 1980's. There is one working orange grove that scents the air with a heavenly aroma in the spring.
There is no mayor and governmental authority comes from Orange County. A community group the Tangerine Improvement Society represents the community but not all are members. Some older residents claim it was taken over by newer residents and others fear that longtime resident interests will be dwarfed by an influx of new housing.
