The Sistine Chapel is part of the set of buildings known as the Apostolic Palace, the residence of the Pope.

Construction started in 1473 and completed in 1481. There has been much restoration work done on it over the years.

The walls and decorations have been frescoed throughout by the greatest Renaissance artists, the most famous is the ceiling by Michelangelo.

Michelangelo painted 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) of the chapel ceiling between 1508 and 1512.

In a recent renovation, a controversial decision was made to remove all previous restorations, and simply enhance the original painting. It was completed in 1994.
