One type of early castle was the wooden motte and baileycastle.

A motte was a usually two-storey castle on a hill, which was surrounded by a moat. A bailey stood at the foot of the hill and housed the hall, church, houses for the servants, a blacksmith, and pens for the animals. Both the motte and bailey were surrounded by palisade walls, and were connected by a ramp.

Also, they were better at defending because they had a better view of the people trying to attck then trying to defend and attck at the same time.

Different parts of a Motte and Bailey castle:

Motte: The Motte was the large mound of mud and clay which held the keep.

Bailey: The Bailey was an enclosed courtyard where you would find the chapel, the horses' stables, and huts for the baron's staff.

Keep: The highest part and hardest part of the castle to get to. In many books you will read that the keep is the 'last line of defence.'

Palisade: The wooden fence surrounding the bailey.

Drawbridge/gateway: The entrance to the castle. By using a drawbridge, the castle could control who would be allowed in and out.

Manor: A collection of houses in the Motte.
