maybe they can be descended from the European polecat or the Steppe polecat. Maybe they could be related to a extinct species, no one knows for sure.
Ferrets are believed to be descended from the European Polecat, which you can see at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Polecat. This was due to a process of artificial, rather than natural, selection at the hands of humans, however, who bred ferrets in order to hunt rabbits and so it's not technically evolution. As you'll see from the link, ferrets and polecats are still very similar, though ferrets have a far wider range of colouration.
Most scientists believe that the ferret descended from the European polecat ferret (Mustela putorius) and the Steppe polecat ferret (Mustela eversmanni). It is more true to say that the ferret was domesticated from the European polecat ferret. Domestic ferrets can breed with European polecat ferrets and produce fertile offspring

The collective term for a group of ferrets is a "a business of ferrets" or "a cast of ferrets".
