A dog learns to "sit" on command because the handler says "sit", makes the dog sit by pushing it into a sitting position, and gives it a treat. After several repetitions, the dog learns to associate the word "sit" with a treat, and will then sit when told to - even when it isn't always given a treat.

-that was an example of operant conditioning. other types of learned behaviors are classical conditioning, insight, imprinting, and trial and error.

In cougars, the mothers teach their cubs how to hunt. The adult wolfpack also teaches their pups how to hunt together. Mother bison teach their calves the best grasses and plants to eat and where, and what not to eat and which animals that have to be avoided at all costs. Mother bears teach their cubs about hunting, berry picking, fishing, and the best places to find tasty grubs. One example in farm animals is: cows teach their calves to trust humans, what grasses are best to graze and where, where the best water sources are, how to act when being herded, etc.
