Although I am not particularly familiar with the term 'Variations of Plot', I do think that I can point out a thinking direction that might help you with your answer. Because I do know that a Story can have for example only one Plot or Multiple Plots. For example you can have a story that's only about a Persuit, or you can have a Multiple Plot Story that's about a Persuit combined with for example a Rescue and a Quest. I guess in that situation you can speak about Variation of Plot.
