What is it like to live in a shanty town?

In a shanty town there are lots of handmade houses around. A shanty town is a slum settlement (sometimes illegal or unauthorized) of poorer people than you and I who live in improvised dwellings made from scrap materials: often plywood, corrugated metal, and sheets of plastic. Shanty towns, which are usually built on the periphery of cities, often do not have proper sanitation, electricity, or telephone services. Many places that are considered shanty towns are covered in human and animal waste. There are very few facilities in A Shanty Town. Many people wire their homes directly to the electrical wires and take energy illegally.I hope this helps whether its used for homework or not. :)

Who are the shanty Irish?

The word "shanty" is not used much in Ireland. It seems to be a word used mainly by americans. "Shanty Irish" was used to describe the poorest of the poor Irish immigrants, the kind who ended up in shanty town (the origin of the word "shanty" is not known, but it might come from the Irish "sean tí", meaning "old house"). Today "shanty" in the States is a derogatory term for people who in Ireland might be known as culchies but the people so described need not necessarily be of Irish descent.

Why do people live in shanty towns?

The area of were slum houses are, are called shanty towns. For people who live in shanty town life is very hard. Not only the houses are small and cramped but the area were they are based are too. Most shanty towns don't have access to clean water and electricity. People have to walk miles just to get some water and even then the water isn't clean .Because they can't get electricity they have candles to light up their home in the dark. There are also no sewers so there is a high risk of diseases. Crime is also big problem in the shanty town; because people have such bad life's they wont to forget. The way the people do this is by drinking, taking drugs. Some even get glue and sniff it up there nose, it makes them forget and not worry about how they are going to sort there life out, get a job and money, which is exactly what they want. This is very bad for their health. Education is another big problem People have to pay to get an education so most children do not go to school because their parents can't afford it. So most people can't read or write. Jobs are very limited because people in the city have better education so they take the jobs and leave the others to wash clothes, pick up rubbish, clean the toilets so on .
