Much of the cheese consumed in the United States is not actual cheese in the traditional sense (it can legally be labeled as "cheese food"). Mr Kraft patented it after deciding that he needed to market something more in line with our country's bland tastes. (I am certain this is the reason why McDonald's does not have a "Brie Burger"). It was one of the many processed foods which were created in the second and third decades of the 20th century. Most people do not realize that this product does not require refrigeration and can live out its miserable existence at room temperature without decreasing shelf life.
