What are generating electricity?

Electricity generators are devces that make electricity. They are the primary way that different forms of energy (chemical, nuclear, gravitational etc) are converted into electrical energy. They are made by wrapping copper wire around an iron rod to form the core (called the armature). This core is mounted so it can rotate inside a surrounding case that is linned with magnets. When the core rotates, electricity is created in the core's copper wires. The core is rotated two main ways; (1)attaching a pully to the iron rod and then attach this (with a belt) to something like a gas engine. This is how your car generator/alternator works. (2) Attach blades or fins to the iron rod and let fast moving steam or water rotate the core by hitting the blades. This is how power companies make electricity. The whole world runs on electric generators and I think it is one of the most important inventions of modern times.
