Many types of garbage are not biodegradable, which means it will not deteriorate over time. Garbage in land fills stays there for hundreds of years and there is no way of getting rid of it. Chemicals from landfills can leach off in rain water and pollute ground water and nearby rivers.

When a land fill becomes full, many cities will cap it with soil. These caps can be used as public parks, gardens, or can be returned to natural wilderness. There is a lot of organic waste (meat and plant products) mixed into the garbage, which will decompose. When the organic waste decomposes, it produces methane gas, which can be tapped into and used as an alternative energy source.
