I, being in 8th grade myself, LOVE the Alex Rider series! they're great for girls and guys! Also, PLEASE don't let them only read Twilight!

If they are a girl, Try Wildwood Dancing by Juliet M. Also, your girl could read the Once Upon A Timenovels. they are great! Another good one is Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys.

If it is a guy, try The Ranger's Apprenticeseries! Also, try The Last Apprentice series. I love 'em! (just make sure they aren't easily frightened)

Some good ones for both guys and gals, are the Percy Jackson: and the Olympian (5 books) series ; The Keys to the Kingdom series; Fablehaven ; Leven Thumps ; Pendragon series; Harry Potter; The 39 Clues
anything by horowitz, Anthony
I don't really like chapter books. I like comic books and the good books for seventh graders is kitchen princess and if you read it you will like it.
"Among the Hidden", "Touching Spirit Bear", "When Zachary Beaver Came to Town", "Killing Mr. Griffin", and "Holes".
Anything by Diana Wynne Jones (Exellent series on Howl's moving castle)

Warriors

Someone named Eva

The Hunger Games

Harry Potter

May I suggest to you nonfiction.

There is a big world full of fascinating things about which you can learn.

Approach learning as something very fun to do, and it will be.

I just finished The Devil's Delusion - Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions, by David Berlinski.

He's a brilliant scientist and an entertaining writer.

I also liked Slouching Towards Gomorrah - Modern Liberalism and America's Decline by Robert H Bork.

I personally love the Young Royals series, i.e Patience Princess Catherine, Doomed Queen Anne, Mary Bloody Mary and Beware, Princess Elizabeth (in that order) are all about the Young Princesses of the Tudor family, Princess Catherine being King Henry the 8th's first wife, Anne is his second, Mary is his daughter and Elizabeth is his other daughter.

A fifth grade boy is probably interested in action/adventure books, or sport books.

A fifth grade girl is probably interested in a drama or friendship novel. Some might also me interested in romance. For romance, I recommend the twilight series.

Is twilight good for a fifth grader?

A 5th grader could enjoy but, it is EXTREMELY mature for one. They could be fine as long as they don't read the last book. The movies are PG-13 so I would recommend they wait until then so no unwanted questions pop up.

How many books should you read?

I'm in fifth grade and my teacher is giving us a 40-book challenge, but most of the kids are going higher, so at least 40 maybe more, It all depends on the length of the book you read, for a fifth grader at least 200 pages.
