Book reports are always good topics for children. Any book read in school or available at the library would be a good option. (Some popular books for 10-year-olds are The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and The Indian in the Cupboard.) Also, 10-year-olds may wish to write about their favorite movie, past time, season of the year, holiday, or vacation. Such topics are easy to write about and often entertaining as well as thoughtful. I myself have written about such topics as the circus, Thanksgiving foods, and my summer vacation, while in Elementary school. Finally, 10-year-olds may enjoy writing a general piece on a time in modern history or a certain group of people. A short essay or writing on Native Americans, slavery, or the Holocaust are popular pieces. Make sure to use kid-friendly research websites and books. Children may be interested in focusing on a certain item within a time period. Suggested topics are: "Toys children played with during the early 1900s" or "The history of movies". In addition, all of the above can be modified slightly to create writing prompts for fiction stories or poems, which are quite fun, especially for children.
