Gothic buildings primarily utilized flying buttresses as exterior support elements. These structures transferred the weight of the roof and walls outward to support the walls, allowing for higher ceilings and larger windows. Additionally, pointed arches and ribbed vaults contributed to the overall stability and aesthetic of Gothic architecture.
Gothic art emerged in France about 1140, and then spread to the rest of Europe the following century. Some famous buildings inspired by Gothic architecture are the Cologne Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris and the Milan Cathedral.
