HEAT is an acronym for High Explosive Anti - Tank and is always spelled in upper case. It is designed to be used against Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV) such as tanks and personnel carriers. HEAT rounds use a shaped charge and have a hollow cylinder ahead of the explosive part of the round. When the round detonates, the blast force is directed thru the cylinder and concentrated against the armor. It actually melts its way thru the armor scattering shrapnel around the inside of the vehicle, killing the crew.
