Someone who goes against religious or institutional orthodoxy or upsets a status quo and ends up in trouble with the authorities. For example, the Catholic Church labeled theological and philosophical opponents as "heretics" and burned or tortured them during the inquisitions.

Heretic is a word we don't use too often today. You can dissent from lots of Church teachings without technically being a heretic. To be a heretic, technically, you have to deny something really big, like the divinity of Christ or that God is Trinity. What does it really mean to be a heretic, though, in the popular sense?

Most of the time I read this word when people call themselves heretics because they refuse to conform to organized religion, or to give full assent to dogmatic decrees from the Church. They take pride in being heretical because it proves them closer to the Truth than anyone who claims special access to God because of their dogma.
