Here is John 11.14:

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

The Christian beliefs about this passage are plainly that it is simple and says what it means - that Jesus had answered his disciples when they asked about Lazarus, that he slept. But when they questioned him further, he told them plainly:

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

You can see how Jesus equates sleep with death; so different to our concepts.
