they usually have five to ten traps that they attach on a long rope conected to a pulley machine and they have a special bait in them that attracks the lobster and they get trapped inside. the fishermen then pull up the cages with a machine and measure the lobster to see if its long enough. they set the measuring tool in the eye socket and move it down the lobster. if it stays behind or lays on the last groove of the armor it is long enough. they throw back all the ones that are too small. dont worry about hurting them in the release if you just toss them in the water; they are pretty strong animals.
