Literally Space Marines who turned evil.
In the 31st Millennium, the Primarch Horus was chosen by his father the immortal Emperor to be His Warmaster and continue His Great Crusade while the Emperor returned to Terra. Arrogance, conflict, and the powers of the warp twisted Horus's mind, turning him against his father. Having forsaken the Imperium, Horus managed to turn fully half of the 20 Space Marine legions against the Emperor. Civil war ravaged the galaxy for years until Horus was finally defeated. The surviving traitor marines, now known as Chaos Marines (for in forsaking the Imperium, they had pledged their allegiance to Chaos--the powers of the warp), retreated to the Eye of Terror, where they continue to plan and launch raids and campaigns against the Imperium of Mankind.
