Here's a short answer: Mongoose are afraid of humans, as we are much bigger than them, however, if a human were ever to disturb their habitat or way of life in anyway then they wouldn't be afraid to charge back at that specific human.

Mongoose are known for instinctive bravery and courage in regards to protection. But some species are touted for their ability to aggressively seek out and attack snakes! Mongoose are renowned Cobra fighters.
Since Mongoose are extremely fast they can easily avoid strikes (bites) from the snake. And too, the mongoose possesses a high tolerance to venomous bites.
The mongoose usually feigns forward lunges at the snake, in a show of aggression, then dashes in seizing the snake by the neck. The animal's sharp teeth bite deeply in, breaking the snake's spine.
