Music is automatically protected by copyright as soon as it is fixed in a tangible medium (notated or recorded). Unless other arrangements were made, the composer/songwriter will be the copyright holder, and the song will be protected for his or her life, plus 50 years in most countries (the US and some others have extended this to 70 years).

A recording requires a license from the copyright holder of the underlying song, but then acquires its own protection.

Does copyright apply to soundcloud?

A copyright protects original material (text, images, audio) recorded in a fixed format. There are two types of copyright, national and international. National copyright only protects original material produced within the country's borders. If your music was produced in the United States, then it is protected under US copyright laws, but not laws of other countries. International copyright, on the other hand, protects your music no matter where it was produced. A European artist can be protected by international copyright laws in the USA, for example.

Can you publish music on YouTube without violating copyright laws?

copyright of music belongs to the sound recording company, composer and lyrics writer if the music is quite old (mozart etc) you can publish it, otherwise it is a copyright infringement to publish music on youtube without the owners permission The best way to avoid copyright infringement on YouTube is to post only content that is entirely your original work.
