The big issues are the small amount of power they actually produce as well as the small window of wind they produce well in.

Most systems are rated at wind speeds of 28 mph. Should the wind exceed this amount, the turbine will stop producing power and some will draw power from the grid to prevent the turbine from being damaged.

Should the wind not maintain a steady speed of 28 mph, the system will produce less power. Winds of 14 MPH average will still produce up to 10% of rated power. (Power is cubed) A typical wind system in use today will provide about 8% of what they are rated at.

The second big issue is their environmental impact. Wind turbines kill millions of flying creatures each year. Birds, bats and other flying creatures are unable to deal with the speed of the turbine blades.

Another issue is the high maintenance issues of these systems. Factored in with the number of units needed to run even a small city, the fuel costs of maintenance personal add to the overhead, CO2 emissions and viability of the system.
