Harmful effects of fungi to humans
A number of moulds and yeasts cause human and animal diseases. For example, species of Aspergillus,Fusarium, and Sporothrix are opportunistic pathogens and easily infect individuals with weak immune systems.

Apart from infection and allergies, some moulds produce toxic compounds that are harmful to both humans and animals. The best known of these toxins is aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is mainly produced by some species of Aspergillussuch as Aspergillus flavusand Aspergillus parasitica. Aflatoxin is a powerful trigger of cancer (i.e., it is carcinogenic).

A fungus is an organism that is neither an animal or plant, although it is more like a plant, except it has no chlorophyll and can't make its own food. Mushrooms, mold and yeast are all types of fungi. Fungi are critical in the decomposition of organic matter and have both positive and negative effects on the environment.
It is difficult to develop a chemical that kills fungi but not harm humans because fungi and humans are both eukaryotic organisms, making it challenging to find targets unique to fungi. Additionally, the similarities in cellular structures and processes between fungi and humans also make it hard to find chemicals that selectively target fungal cells over human cells. Furthermore, the potential for off-target effects and toxicity in humans adds complexity to developing such a selective chemical.

Ergot belongs to the group of fungi known as Claviceps. This group typically infects cereal grains, forming hard masses known as ergot sclerotia. Ergot fungi produce toxic alkaloids that can have psychoactive effects on animals and humans when consumed.
