A sparrow will build its nest under the nest of an osprey. The smaller birds get protection because other predators will not mess with the osprey.
Osprey eggs are vulnerable to animal predators such as foxes, skunks, and raccoons as well as other birds. Once grown they are a large bird of prey and are not particularly vulnerable to predation as long as they remain in good health. Historically man has been responsible for a great many Osprey deaths although technically this doesn't fit the dictionary definition of Predator "An organism that lives by preying on other organisms." Sea otters and large raptors such as the bald eagle or osprey.
We live in Northern NY, about a half hour from the Canadian border. As of a few days ago, I didn't know they had an enemy, but yesterday over our lake, I watched an osprey repeatedly attack a beautiful American Bald Eagle! They locked talons a few times, and then as the eagle was leaving the territory, the osprey took one more swipe at him and caused serious damage to his left wing! It was very sad to see as he was struggling to fly back to his lake which is about a half mile from here. He flew very erratic, and I'm not sure if he even made it. So I would say the osprey is a definite enemy of the eagle.
The plural form of osprey is ospreys.
