It's very improbable that humans evolved from apes, but we most likely did evolve from a common ancestor. Actually, it's very likely that humans evolved from apes -- ancestors of chimpanzees, more specifically. Evolutionary biologists have known that for quite some time, but recent genetic discoveries have revealed that the genes of chimps and humans differ by only about 1.23 percent. Further, genetic researchers at Harvard and MIT have recently propounded the theory that humans and chimp ancestors diverged millions of years ago and then came back together through interbreeding. Primates, including chimps and bonobos, didn't become extinct the moment the new species emerged from them. That is not the way evolution works. Although it's possible, even likely, that a new species will be able to procreate more successfully and eventually dominate other, older species, perhaps to the point of their extinction, it's not necessarily so.
