A place for people to vote can be called a polling station, therefore, polls are part of elections. I wouldn't say that they actually conduct elections, however. People do that, not polling stations.

run elections
When elections are free, that means that there is an actual choice; anyone can run for office and anyone can vote for the candidate whom they actually prefer. Many countries have had fake elections to create an illusion of democracy. In a fake election, some candidates are not allowed to run and may even be arrested if they try to run, or in some cases, only one political party is allowed (communist nations have always used that system - they have elections, but there is only one candidate on the ballot) or people are coerced to vote in the way that the government requires.
Primary elections or primaries is what these elections are called.
