Could be your shifter cable has stretched and you need to replace it? On my 1995 Saturn SL2 I could not keep the shifter in 3rd gear. I replaced the tranny with one from the junkyard and the problem still persisted. I talked to Saturn and they said it was my shifter cable. I installed the shifter cable and the new tranny goes into 3rd gear without any problems.
Please use this as an FYI. It was time consuming and expensive to replace the shifter cable, but a lot less expensive than the tranny. Hopefully it is something simpler for you.
If it's only when you attempt third gear the problem is in your transmission.
Gear shift linkage?Remove gear shift from top and align
#1: crappy driving, #2: the sliding clutch that's does the actually engaging of gear might be heavily worn(caused by the 1st), #3: faulty materials(it happens)
That is called limp in mode. The transmission computer defaults to third gear when it detects a malfunction and sets a trouble code.
missing teeth on third gear
Be sure the trans is full with the proper lubricant.
You need to have the system checked for trouble codes to know the possible causes. The trans computer defaults to second gear when it detects a problem.
The transmission computer defaults to second gear when it detects a malfunction and sets a code. You need to have the TCM checked for codes to know possible causes.
Mechanical failures causes incorrect gear ratio in the VW Touareg. Lots of torque is what causes the incorrect gear ratio in VW Touareg.
Your front end alignment is out. Take it to a mechanic as soon as possible.
It is the transmission gear selector. P = Park R = Reverse N = Neutral D = Drive 3 = Third Gear 2 = Second Gear L = Low Gear or First Gear Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Third Gear, Second Gear, Low Gear
If would not be bad for a car engine to shift from third to second gear if you are traveling at 30mph.
