The three major mountain ranges that surround India are the Himalayas in the north, the Western Ghats in the west, and the Eastern Ghats in the east. These mountain ranges play a significant role in determining the climate and geography of the region.
The Brahmaputra marks the eastern most boundary of the Himalayas. Beyond the Dihang gorge, the Himalayas bend sharply to the south and spread along the eastern boundary of India. They are known as Purvanchal or Eastern hills and mountains. These hills which run through the north-eastern states are mostly composed of sandstones and covered with dense forests. The Purvanchal comprises the Patkai hills, the Naga hills, Manipur hills and the Mizo hills. Features of this range include conical peaks, steep slopes and deep valleys. Places on the windward side of these hills are the world's wettest places, having high annual rainfall.
