I think that in the near future somebody might find the remains of a dog or a cat. The dog and cat would have to been buried immediately so their body wouldn't start to decompose and you would have to bury them deep so that they can stay preserved.

Here are some good fossil facts:

  • Most fossils are found in sedimentary rocks
  • Fossils are the remains of long-dead organisms
  • Most organisms don't form fossils because their bodies decompose
  • Petrified fossils are fossils where part of the organism's body has been replaced by minerals
  • Mold fossils are fossils where the organism's body was buried and decomposed, but left an impression or imprint in the sediment
  • Trace fossils are formed when an organism leaves footprints or tracks in the sediment
  • Fossilized poop is called a coprolite
  • Some fossils are found in tar pits, amber and ice, and contain the whole organism's body
  • It's pretty unusual to find a whole fossilized organism - usually you find pieces of the body
  • The oldest known fossil is 3.2 billion years old - it's a blue-green alga that lived on rocks
  • The largest single fossil ever found was an entire fossilized tree that is over 72 meters long
  • There are huge fossil beds where many different fossils can be found together - these are usually where a watering hole was found and a catastrophe killed and buried many animals

The word "petrified " means " turning into stone."
